Aarwangen Castle

The origins of Aarwangen Castle date back to the 13th century, when the Lords of Aarwangen, Kyburg ministerials, built it to control the river crossing. Knight Burkart von Aarwangen is considered the first lord of the castle. The Aarwangen family was among the most influential noble families in the Oberaargau and at the Kyburg court. After the lineage died out in 1350, the dominion passed to the Grünenberg family. In 1432, Bern acquired the castle and established a bailiwick, which existed until 1798. After a private phase, Bern bought the castle back in 1805 and used it as a chancellery, court, and prison. Following a judicial reform in 2012, the castle stood empty until a motion in 2019 led to the establishment of a foundation. After renovations, the castle was reopened as a cultural center in 2025.

Today, Aarwangen Castle serves as a cultural center and is open to the public. Visitors can explore multimedia exhibitions, participate in guided tours and workshops, and experience escape rooms in the former prison cells. The castle also provides a platform for regional artists.
