City Wall Avallon

Remparts d’Avallon is the name of the medieval city wall of the French city of Avallon in the Yonne department of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. The fortifications were mainly built in the 12th and 13th centuries and made the city, which lies on a steep rocky plateau above the River Cousin, almost impregnable. Numerous towers, five of which are still fully preserved today, once additionally defended the city. Among them is the Tour de l’Horloge, which contains a 15th-century clock. Although the walls were damaged several times, and even partially razed in the 17th century, they remain characteristic of the city of Avallon.
