Abbaye de l'Île-Chauvet

The Abbaye Notre-Dame de l’Île-Chauvet is a former abbey located in Bois-de-Céné, in the Vendée department of the Pays de la Loire region in western France. It once stood in the borderlands (Marches) between Brittany and Poitou, on what was then an island in the Breton Marsh.

The abbey was founded around 1130 by Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Absie, invited by Pierre II de La Garnache to drain and exploit the salt marshes of the area. It followed a strict Benedictine rule, close to that of Cîteaux, as part of the spiritual renewal of the 11th–12th centuries linked to Géraud de Salles.

The oldest surviving parts (the choir) date from the second half of the 12th century. The nave was completed shortly before the middle of the 13th century, and the conventual buildings (including the present refectory wing) also belong mainly to the 13th century. These were later modified in the 17th century to accommodate a Camaldolese community. The vaults were altered over time, and the crossing was probably vaulted in the 14th century.

The abbey suffered repeated destruction: it was pillaged in 1381 during the Hundred Years’ War, burned in 1588, and occupied by Benjamin de Rohan, seigneur de Soubise, until 1622. The last Benedictine monk left in 1625. After unsuccessful attempts to restore monastic life, Camaldolese monks settled there in 1679. In 1791 the abbey was sold as national property. In 1828 it was acquired by the Guillet de La Brosse family, who remain the owners to this day. In 1885 Jules de La Brosse built a neo-Renaissance manor house nearby.

The ruins of the church (including the holy-water font in the nave), two 12th-century buildings, the Gothic well in the centre of the former cloister, and the monastery floors as shown on a 1668 plan were classified as a Monument historique by decree of 30 January 1992.

Today the site remains private property and occasionally hosts cultural events.
