Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Brantôme

The foundation of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Brantôme is traditionally attributed to Charlemagne in 769, with monks already living in the rock caves in the 8th century. The first monastic complex was destroyed twice by Normans and Vikings in the 9th century. A reconstruction took place around 900, and in the 10th century, the abbey regained prosperity. The distinctive bell tower was built in the 11th century. After a period of relaxed discipline in the 11th century, the abbey was reformed through its connection to the Abbey of La Chaise-Dieu and developed into an important pilgrimage site in the 12th and 13th centuries. The Hundred Years' War brought severe destruction, and the abbey was devastated in 1382 and converted into a fortress by the English in 1480. In the 16th century, internal conflicts arose, followed by a reform through its affiliation with the Congregation of Chezal-Benoît. The famous historian Pierre de Bourdeille, known as “Brantôme,” served as abbot from 1558 to 1614 and protected the abbey during the Wars of Religion. In the 17th century, the abbey joined the Congregation of Saint-Maur, which undertook extensive restorations. The abbey was finally dissolved during the French Revolution.
