Abbaye Saint-Vincent de Nieul-sur-l'Autise

The Abbaye Saint-Vincent de Nieul-sur-l’Autise is a former Romanesque abbey located in Nieul-sur-l’Autise, in the Vendée department of western France (historically part of Poitou).

Construction began in 1069 under Airaud Gassedenier, a faithful follower of William VIII, Count of Poitiers and Duke of Aquitaine. The foundation is recorded in the Chronicle of Saint-Maixent. It was established for a community of Augustinian canons regular, who were charged with draining and developing the Poitevin Marsh. The foundation was confirmed by the count-duke in 1076. In 1141 King Louis VII (husband of Eleanor of Aquitaine) declared it a royal abbey.

The abbey is an outstanding example of Poitevin Romanesque architecture. The church has two towers — one over the crossing and one over the west façade — and a barrel-vaulted nave reinforced by strong transverse arches resting on twin columns. The Romanesque cloister has survived almost intact and is one of the finest of its kind in the region.

The complex was largely ruined in 1568 during the Wars of Religion. Its survival and restoration in the 19th century are due in part to Prosper Mérimée, who was impressed by the remaining “Poitevin Romanesque” ensemble. A 19th-century tower was later added above the Romanesque portal, altering the original silhouette of the façade.

The abbey was classified as a Monument historique in 1862 and again in 1875. Between 2000 and 2003 it was carefully renovated by the Nantes architectural firm Tetrarc and transformed into a museum. Original tuffeau stone now coexists with modern materials such as steel and glass. The site includes exhibition rooms devoted to ancient musical instruments, Romanesque capitals, and a “Maison Aliénor”.
