Roman Theater Avella
The Roman Amphitheatre of Avella (Anfiteatro Romano di Avella) is one of the oldest amphitheatres in Campania (Italy). It is located in the town of Avella (province of Avellino) and dates back to the 1st century BC (late Republican period).
Key Features
Built in opus reticulatum (reticulate work) using tuff stone.
Similar in size to the amphitheatre of Pompeii (approx. 60 × 35 m).
The arena is set below the surrounding ground level.
Well-preserved sections include parts of the lower and middle seating tiers (Ima and Media Cavea) with tuff seats, as well as the main entrances (Vomitoria).
It was constructed against the ancient Samnite city walls and a natural slope.
The amphitheatre forms the core of the archaeological park of the ancient city of Abella and is used for cultural events today. It is a striking example of Roman engineering in the area.
