Königsmünster Abbey

The origins of Königsmünster Abbey date back to 1928, when monks from three Bavarian monasteries established the community. The city of Meschede supported the Benedictines in its construction, and in return, the monks took over the municipal rectorate school. An architectural competition in 1930 led to a design that envisioned a symmetrical complex centered around a church facade. The name Königsmünster, meaning “Monastery of Christ the King,” was chosen, and the monks adopted the stag antlers as a symbol, in reference to the former Grafschaft Abbey. In 1932, the monastery attained the status of an independent priory. In 1941, the complex was confiscated during the National Socialist era. After the war, in 1956, the monastery was elevated to an abbey. During this phase, the abbey church was also built, consecrated in 1964 as the “Church of Peace,” and characterized by a modern design language. The community grew significantly in the following decades, particularly through its involvement in youth work and the opening of the Oase youth guesthouse in 1981. In 2001, the “Haus der Stille” (House of Silence) was inaugurated, whose architecture received particular attention.

Königsmünster Abbey is located in Meschede, a town in the Hochsauerland district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The complex is situated at an elevation of approximately 301 meters above sea level.

Today, Königsmünster Abbey is an active Benedictine monastery. The monks are involved in education, youth work, pastoral care, and crafts. The “Haus der Stille” offers opportunities for contemplation and retreats.
