Abtei Maria Frieden

The origins of Maria Frieden Abbey date back to 1952, when Mariawald Abbey acquired the former Dahlemer Binz sheep farm. This site was intended to become the first Trappistine women's monastery in Germany. The name "Maria Frieden" (Mary of Peace) was deliberately chosen to emphasize prayer for peace. The first monks from Mariawald began establishing agriculture and setting up a chapel and living quarters. In December 1952, the first nuns from the Netherlands moved in, and on December 8, 1953, regular monastic life began. The community initially supported itself through agriculture and the production of an herbal liqueur. In 1955, Maria Frieden was elevated to an abbey. Due to the community's growth, a new abbey church and additional monastery buildings were constructed starting in the mid-1950s, with the foundation stone laid in 1955 and the church consecrated in 1958. The expansion of the monastery continued until 1968. Later, agriculture was abandoned in favor of a paraments weaving workshop. In 2021, the monastery relocated to Kall-Steinfeld.

The monastery is situated in Euskirchen, a town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Maria Frieden Abbey remains an active Trappistine monastery today, continuing to serve as a place of contemplation and prayer.
