Münsterschwarzach Abbey

The origins of Münsterschwarzach Abbey date back to before 783. Historical research connects it with two predecessor institutions: a convent on the Schwarzach and the male monastery of Megingaudshausen in the Steigerwald. Both were founded by the noble Mattonen family. The convent, which held the patronages of Salvator, Mary, and Sebastian, was dissolved by 877 at the latest, and the nuns moved to Zurich. The monks from Megingaudshausen subsequently occupied the vacated buildings on the Schwarzach, thereby establishing the direct continuity of Münsterschwarzach. In 993, the sovereignty of the Bishop of Würzburg over the monastery was confirmed, initiating a long period of dependence. Despite repeated conflicts over its rule, Münsterschwarzach remained part of the Würzburg dominion until its secularization in 1803. Under abbots such as Wolfher and Egbert, who was beatified in the 20th century, the abbey developed into a center for art, culture, and monastic reforms, whose influence extended over large parts of the Holy Roman Empire. Another patronage, Felicitas, is documented for the year 1270.

The monastery is located in Schwarzach am Main, in the Münsterschwarzach district, in the Kitzingen region of Bavaria. Its geographical elevation is approximately 196 meters above sea level.

Today, Münsterschwarzach Abbey is an active Benedictine monastery of the Congregation of St. Ottilien. The community comprises over 100 Benedictine monks, a majority of whom work on site, while others are active in dependent houses or in missionary work worldwide.
