Oelenberg Abbey

Abbey

The Abbey of Oelenberg is a monastery in Reiningue, near Mulhouse in the French department of Haut-Rhin. Since the 11th century, it has shaped Alsace as a spiritual center and is now inhabited by Trappist monks.

History+

The abbey's foundation dates back to 1046, when Heilwig of Dagsburg, Countess of Eghisheim and mother of Pope Leo IX, established a priory for Augustinian canons. The church was consecrated in 1049 by Pope Leo IX. In 1626, Jesuits from Freiburg im Breisgau took over the monastery, before it served the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg from 1774 until the French Revolution.
