Rommersdorf Abbey, a former Premonstratensian abbey, represents the oldest establishment of this order in the historic Archdiocese of Trier. Located in Neuwied, Rhineland-Palatinate, it stands as a testament to medieval monastic culture and its evolution.

History+

The monastery was founded around 1114. Initially, Benedictine monks settled there, but they soon left due to the modest conditions. Around 1135, at the instigation of Archbishop Albero of Montreuil of Trier, the abbey was re-settled, this time by Premonstratensians from Floreffe in Belgium. Rommersdorf developed into a significant daughter monastery of Floreffe. The abbey church, consecrated to Saint Mary and Saint John the Evangelist, served as a burial site for noble families of the region, including the Counts of Wied and Isenburg.
