The Abbey of Saint-Michel-de-Frigolet is a historic monastery in the Montagnette hills, near Tarascon in France. Originally a Benedictine monastery, it now houses Premonstratensian canons.
History+
The abbey's origins trace back to the 10th century, when monks from Montmajour left the swampy surroundings of their mother monastery and settled in the Montagnette region. The monastery grew around the pilgrimage chapel of Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Remède. In 1638, Anne of Austria, after the birth of Louis XIV, donated three paintings by Pierre Mignard, which are now among the abbey's treasures. Secularized and sold during the French Revolution in 1791, the complex later served as a boarding school, where Frédéric Mistral was a student, among others.
