Weingarten Abbey
The former Benedictine monastery of Weingarten Abbey is located on Martinsberg in the town of Weingarten, in southeastern Baden-Württemberg. This edifice was once the dynastic monastery of the Welfs.
History+
The Benedictine monastery was founded in 1056 by Welf IV on Martinsberg. Monks from Altomünster settled the new abbey, while the nuns from the burnt-down Altdorf monastery moved to Altomünster. In 1094, the abbey received a Holy Blood relic from Welf IV's wife, leading to numerous endowments and wealth. The name "Weingarten" has been documented since around 1123. The monastery served as the burial site for the Welfs, housing the remains of twelve members of this lineage. In 1179, the monastery came under Staufer possession and was elevated to an Imperial Abbey in 1274.
