The Roman fort of Gholaia, also known by ancient names such as castra Chol(aia) or Chosol, was a Roman military camp in the province of Africa proconsularis. It served to secure and monitor the Limes Tripolitanus, a staggered system of military outposts. The fort is located south of the Bu Njem oasis on the edge of the Sahara in Libya and is an outstanding example of Roman military architecture of that period.
History+
The construction of Gholaia fort began during the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus (193–211 AD), when the Roman Empire extended its border in Tripolitania far to the south. A detachment of the Legio III Augusta arrived at the site on January 24, 201 AD, and immediately began construction. Within the same year, the fort's four gates were completed. A significant building inscription from 203 AD in the military bathhouse testifies to the early construction phase. Centurion Quintus Avidius Quintianus donated the baths and left an inscription urging relaxation in the desert heat. The site became the most thoroughly researched Limes fort in Tripolitania thanks to decades of archaeological work by René Rebuffat.

Gholaia fort is situated in Bu Njem, in the Al Jabal al Gharbi district, Tripolitania region, Libya. It lies at an elevation of approximately 97 meters above sea level, south of the Bu Njem oasis on the edge of the Sahara.
