Gföhl Manor

The noble residence was built around 1300. In the first half of the 14th century, the building was extended with a tower.

The first documented owner was a knight, "Sir Heinrich von Bärenfels," who was mentioned in a document from 1357. The Bärenfels family owned the castle until the end of the 15th century. During this period, the castle was primarily used as a fortified residence and administrative center for the surrounding estates.

The Renaissance Period: Transformation and Expansion

In 1498, the castle was acquired by the wealthy merchant family "Fugger" from Augsburg. Under their ownership, the castle underwent significant changes. Between 1520 and 1540, the Fuggers transformed the medieval fortress into a magnificent Renaissance palace. The defensive walls were partially removed, and large windows were added. The interior was redesigned with elaborate frescoes and stucco work.

A notable addition from this period is the "Golden Hall," completed in 1535, which served as a ballroom and reception hall. The Fuggers also established an extensive library and an art collection, making the castle a cultural center of the region.

In the 17th century, the castle passed into the possession of the "Counts of Schönborn." They carried out further renovations in the Baroque style, including the addition of a chapel and a Baroque garden. The castle remained in the Schönborn family until the early 19th century.

During the Napoleonic Wars, the castle suffered some damage but was subsequently restored. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it served various purposes, including a military hospital and a school. Since 1960, the castle has been owned by the state and is now open to the public as a museum.

Current Use and Significance

Today, the historic building is a popular tourist destination and houses a museum that showcases the history of the castle and the region. It also hosts various cultural events, concerts, and exhibitions. The castle is considered an outstanding example of medieval and Renaissance architecture and is a protected cultural monument.
