The Agnetenkloster in Magdeburg was once a significant Cistercian nunnery, with a history dating back to the 13th century. Although the original monastery buildings no longer exist, the St. Agnes Church bears witness to its former presence and importance in the Old New Town of the Saxon-Anhalt state capital.
History+
The monastery was founded in 1230 by Archbishop Albrecht I von Käfernburg. It was dedicated to Saint Agnes and housed a convent of Cistercian nuns. Between 1253 and 1260, Archbishop Rudolf von Dingelstädt elevated the monastery church to a parish church. Over time, it merged with the nearby Martini Church. Even after the Reformation, the monastery managed to persist; in 1577, the last nuns from the neighboring Lorenzkloster found a new home here. The Agnetenkloster was finally dissolved in 1810, after which it was converted into a domain. Just two years later, in 1812, the remaining monastery buildings were demolished to make way for the construction of a fortress.
Location+
The former Agnetenkloster was situated in the Old New Town of Magdeburg, a city in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The current Agnetenstraße still commemorates the historical site of the complex.
