Akropolis (Ἀκρόπολις)-Odeon of Herodes Atticus
At the foot of the Acropolis rock in Athens lies the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, an impressive ancient theater. It was endowed by Herodes Atticus and once accommodated 5000 spectators. Today, it is a central venue and an outstanding example of Roman architecture in Greece.
History+
The theater was gifted to his hometown of Athens by Herodes Atticus in 161 AD and dedicated to the memory of his wife Regilla. It was the third structure of its kind in Athens, following the Odeon of Pericles and that of Pausanias. The architectural form of the Odeon spread from here throughout the Roman world. In 267 AD, the theater was plundered by the Heruli and its roof destroyed, which was never rebuilt. Extensive excavations began in the 19th century, bringing the structure back to light. Since the 1930s, it has been regularly used for events and serves as the main venue for the Athens Festival.
