Akropolis (Ἀκρόπολις)-Parthenon (παρθενών)

The Acropolis was originally a Mycenaean royal fortress and served as a defensive stronghold. After its destruction by the Persians in 480 BC, the complex was rebuilt under the leadership of statesman Pericles and sculptor Phidias. Between 467 and 406 BC, significant structures such as the Propylaea, the Erechtheion, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Parthenon were constructed. The latter, a temple dedicated to the city goddess Pallas Athena, replaced an older building and became the central sanctuary. In the 6th century, the Parthenon was converted into a Christian church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Later, under Ottoman rule, it served as a mosque and housed a gunpowder magazine, which exploded during a siege in 1687, severely damaging the temple. In the early 19th century, Lord Elgin removed numerous sculptures and transported them to London. Since 1986, the Acropolis has been a UNESCO World Heritage site and is undergoing extensive restoration.

The Acropolis is located in Athens, in the Attica region, Greece, at an elevation of approximately 143 m above sea level.

Today, the impressive remains of the ancient city are accessible to visitors. An ambitious restoration program has been underway since the 1980s to preserve and restore the historical structures. The new Acropolis Museum at the foot of the hill showcases archaeological finds and sculptures.
