Alexianerkloster Aachen

The monastery's foundation dates to 1334, when Begard brothers from Cologne were sent to Aachen to establish a branch for nursing the sick. The first documented mention of the monastery building is from 1391. It was located outside the city wall near the Scherptor. In 1469, the building was elevated to a convent house and granted permission for an oratory and a portable altar. Pope Sixtus IV approved the construction of a church or chapel with a small tower in 1472. The chapel, completed in 1477, was consecrated to Saints Augustine and Alexius, after which the order officially became known as the “Alexian Order.” Over the centuries, the monastery was expanded and modernized multiple times, particularly after taking on the care of the mentally ill. The Aachen city fire of 1656 completely destroyed the chapel, while the convent building was restored by 1661. A new, more spacious monastery church was built by 1683 and consecrated in 1687. Despite French rule and secularization, the monastery persisted in the early 19th century due to its charitable work. In the late 19th century, with the establishment of further branches worldwide, the need for more space in Aachen grew. This led to additions such as the Clemensbau in 1880 and the Quirinusbau in 1888. The Clemensbau with the church was newly constructed in 1929 and listed as a historical monument in 1980.

The Alexianerkloster is situated in the urban region of Aachen, in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, along the Alexianergraben.

The current building complex continues to serve as the motherhouse of the Alexian Brothers and houses an attached hospital. The Clemensbau with the St. Alexius Church is protected as a historical monument.
