Neustadt-Glewe Castle

The Alte Burg dates back to the mid-13th century, when it was erected on a natural elevation of the Elde at the behest of the Count of Schwerin. The complex was first documented in 1331. Its primary function was the military safeguarding of the southern and southeastern borders of the County of Schwerin, which were often marked by conflicts with neighboring counties and bishoprics. From 1358, the castle served as a bailiwick and later, until the 18th century, as a secondary residence for the Mecklenburg dukes.
