Old Castle Penzlin

The origins of the castle date back to around 1220, when German settlement of the Penzlin region began and the construction of the complex presumably took place. It served as a second residence for the Princes of Werle. From 1501, the castle became the ancestral seat of the von Maltzahn family. A special feature are the witch cellars, which were installed from 1560 onwards. Following the destruction of the Thirty Years' War, the castle gradually fell into disrepair and was uninhabitable from the 18th century. The Lords of Maltzan therefore built the Schloss Neue Burg as a new residence above the old complex in 1810.
