The old Johanneskirche (Mußbach)

The church and its tower were erected in the 14th century by the Order of St. John, who dedicated it to St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of the order. As early as 1290, Werner, Schenk von Ramberg, had transferred the entire Herrenhof estate to the order. In 1621, during the Thirty Years' War, the building suffered severe damage when troops fought in the area. The nave burned down and was later rebuilt in a simpler and lower form. The War of the Palatine Succession in 1689 also left its mark. In 1707, a partition wall was built between the choir and the nave, allowing the church to be used as a simultaneous church: the choir served Catholics, the nave Protestants. After the consecration of a new Catholic St. John's Church in 1959, the choir of the old church stood empty and increasingly fell into disrepair. In 2007, this part was sold to the Protestant St. John's Church community of Mußbach, which extensively restored the entire structure starting in 2012. The work was completed in 2017, and the old choir has since been available for religious and cultural events.

The Old St. John's Church is located at an elevation of 144 m above sea level in the center of the Mußbach district of Neustadt an der Weinstraße. It forms the northern end of the historic Herrenhof monastic estate.

Today, the church presents itself as a restored cultural monument. The 36-meter-high tower with its four clock faces shapes the townscape. The sacristy is located on the ground floor of the tower. The old choir, which houses 14th-century wall paintings and sculptures, is now used as an independent space for various purposes.
