Old Chapel Cossebaude

The Old Chapel is a chapel built in the 13th century, now disused, in the Cossebaude district of Dresden. The building is listed as a monument in the monument list of the city of Dresden.

The chapel, which is one of the oldest churches in the upper Elbe valley, probably originated in the 13th century and was part of the Cossebaude manor, first mentioned in 1263. In 1441 it was consecrated to Saint Dorothea and was subordinate to the Meissen Cathedral Chapter. In 1492, the Meissen Cathedral Provost Johannes von Konigspergh had the manor dissolved and the resulting community of Cossebaude declared an independent parish. At the same time, the chapel served as the residence of a priest. He was responsible for collecting the ecclesiastical taxes associated with viticulture.

After the Reformation, the Old Chapel was converted into an evangelical house of worship in 1578 and belonged as a filial church to the church of Briesnitz. The weekly Sunday services were held by the teacher, and quarterly by the Briesnitz pastor. Around 1700, the late Gothic building was extended upwards, receiving a hip roof in this context. In 1901, Cossebaude was declared an independent parish. Since the Old Chapel no longer met the requirements, the engine room of the village's former wine press at Talstraße 9 was converted into a prayer room in 1902. After its completion, the Old Chapel was no longer used for religious purposes and was converted into a residential building in 1921. Previously, the local local history museum was located here for several years.
