Hagia Sophia Church

The Old Metropolis Church in Nessebar, Bulgaria, is a three-nave basilica. It is a central part of Nessebar's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The origins of the church date back to the late 5th and early 6th centuries. However, its current form was established at the beginning of the 9th century through reconstruction. During the Middle Ages, it served as a cathedral for the bishoprics of Nessebar. An event was its looting in 1257 by the Venetians, who were on a campaign against the Bulgarian Empire and stole numerous relics. In the 18th century, the basilica was finally abandoned.
The Old Metropolis Church is the largest of the churches in Nessebar whose above-ground structure has survived, showcasing a mixed masonry of stone and brick.
