Old Residence Salzburg

Galery

The Old Residence in Salzburg is an impressive prince-archiepiscopal palace complex, prominently situated between Cathedral Square, Residenzplatz, and Sigmund-Haffner-Gasse. It is considered one of the most valuable secular buildings in Salzburg's Old Town and now houses a gallery showcasing the art treasures of the former prince-archbishops.

History+

The origins of the Old Residence date back to 1120, when it was first documented. Initially, it served as the bishop's seat, which Konrad I moved from the St. Peter's Abbey area in 1124. During the 15th and 16th centuries, the building underwent extensive renovations and expansions. Particularly influential were the measures under Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who began demolishing parts in 1596 to construct a new building in the Late Renaissance style, likely based on plans by Vincenzo Scamozzi. Later archbishops such as Markus Sittikus, Paris Lodron, Guidobald von Thun, and Franz Anton Graf von Harrach also contributed to the design and completion of individual wings, with Harrach overseeing a new facade and the renovation of the state rooms by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. From 1803 to 1918, the Residence served as a dwelling for members of the Austrian imperial family.

Location+

The Old Residence is located in the city of Salzburg, in the Salzburg City district, in the federal state of Salzburg, Austria. It stands at an elevation of approximately 433 meters above sea level.
