Old Cathedral Linz

The church can be visited

In Linz, the Old Cathedral, originally known as the Ignatius Church, is an example of Baroque sacred architecture. It served as the episcopal church of the Diocese of Linz for over a century.

History+

Construction of the Old Cathedral, associated with the Jesuit order, began in 1669 with the laying of the foundation stone by David Fuhrman. After a nine-year construction period, the church was consecrated in 1678 to Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the order. The plans for the single-nave edifice are attributed to Pietro Francesco Carlone, possibly assisted by Carlo Antonio Carlone. In 1773, the Jesuit order was abolished, leading to the temporary abandonment of the church. Emperor Joseph II founded the Diocese of Linz in 1784 and appointed Ernest Johann Nepomuk Graf Herberstein as its first bishop in 1785. He chose the former Jesuit church as the episcopal church, a function it held until 1909.
