Old Bischofsschloss (Fürstenwalde)

The earliest mentions of a castle in Fürstenwalde date back to 1365. After the destruction of the Lebus Cathedral, the cathedral chapter decided in 1373 to move the bishop's seat to Fürstenwalde, a decision confirmed by the Pope twelve years later. Bishop Johann V. von Borschwitz, appointed in 1397, expanded the castle. During the Hussite Wars, Fürstenwalde was attacked by the Taborites, resulting in the destruction and looting of the cathedral. Reconstruction of the cathedral began in 1446. During the Reformation, conflicts arose between Bishop Georg von Blumenthal and the Protestants. Following an attack in 1528, during which the castle, cathedral, and city were plundered, the bishop and canons gradually lost influence.
