In Bayreuth stands the Old Castle, a structure that served as a Hohenzollern residence. It was originally built in the 15th century.

The origins of the Old Castle date back to the years 1440 to 1457, when it was built under Margrave Johann the Alchemist as the first Hohenzollern castle. A decisive moment for Bayreuth and the castle was the relocation of the residence from Plassenburg to Bayreuth in 1603 by Margrave Christian. The building underwent numerous alterations and extensions. In 1753, the north wing was destroyed by a fire caused by the Margrave himself, but was subsequently rebuilt. The castle also suffered destruction from bombings in World War II, but was restored again in the 1950s.
