Old Castle Beihingen
The Old Castle Beihingen is a castle built in the 13th century in Freiberg am Neckar in the district of Ludwigsburg. It consists of two opposing half-timbered buildings, which are enclosed by a wall.
The oldest building of the castle is probably the so-called Stone House, which was built around 1480. However, Romanesque predecessors already existed, of which only the tower is partially preserved. In the 15th century, the previous castle must also have been largely altered, which can be seen, for example, in the corner and defensive towers on the south side. Until Ludwig von Freiberg's purchase in 1534, the castle belonged to the families von Nothafft and Stammheim. Under the Lords of Freiberg, the castle received its current appearance from 1546. After the castle had changed owners several times, the Gemmingen family bought the castle in 1710 and built several outbuildings. In the 19th century, the Stone House served as the residence of the manorial administrator. After the Second World War, the castle was unused until in 1965 the then still independent municipality of Beihingen decided to buy the castle. The Old Castle was reopened in 1969 after extensive three-year renovation work. Today, the castle houses the city archive, a library, and eleven apartments.
