Old Castle (Büdesheim)

The origins of the Old Castle trace back to an earlier Benedictine estate. Around the year 1017, the property was gifted to Michelsberg Abbey in Bamberg, after which the Benedictines presumably converted it into a fortified farm. This estate was part of the Freigericht Kaichen, which came under the sovereignty of the Friedberg Burgraviate in the 15th century. In 1554, the abbey sold the estate, by then called Bruderhof, to the Friedberg Burgrave Johann Brendel von Homburg. Around 1558, he had the current castle built, incorporating older structural elements. In 1569, the castle passed into the possession of the Schütz von Holzhausen family.
