In Bümpliz, a district of Bern, stands the Old Castle, whose origins date back to the 9th century. It began as a royal court and evolved from a wooden building into a stone complex, which today houses a restaurant and the local archive.

History+

The history of the Old Castle begins in the 9th century with a wooden defensive structure that served as a High Burgundian royal court. Ownership passed to local noble and patrician families. In the 11th century, the complex was reinforced with a moat, and in the 13th century, it was converted into a stone round tower. An expansion into a castle took place in the 15th century. In 1742, the New Castle Bümpliz was built in close proximity.
