Cultural Events

The Old Castle Dillingen, a former moated castle, is a historic structure in Saarland, with origins dating back to the 14th century. Located in Dillingen in the district of Saarlouis, it is now used as a versatile venue for cultural events.

History+

The first documented mention of Dillingen Castle occurred in 1357. Its strategically favorable location near the confluence of the Prims and Nied rivers into the Saar allowed for control of important trade routes. Originally owned by the Lords of Siersberg, Dillingen was later separated as an independent territory. In the 16th century, after the extinction of the Lords of Siersberg, the dominion passed to the Braubach family. Under Wilhelm Marzloff von Braubach, the medieval castle was demolished and replaced by a Renaissance castle. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times and experienced sieges and looting. In the 18th century, it was briefly converted into a ducal residence under Prince Ludwig of Nassau-Saarbrücken but was rarely used. After the turmoil of the French Revolution, the castle was sold in 1806 to Dillinger Hütte, which repurposed it for residential use. During World War II, the castle suffered severe damage and was bombed. Between 1953 and 1960, reconstruction took place, during which archaeological excavations uncovered older building structures.
