In Gaildorf, Baden-Württemberg, the Old Castle Gaildorf stands on the banks of the Kocher river. This four-winged half-timbered structure with a stone ground floor was originally a moated castle from the Staufer period. From 1479 onwards, it was transformed into a castle and expanded into a Renaissance complex, which today serves as a museum and event venue.

History+

On the site of a moated castle first mentioned in 1399, whose foundations are still visible in the cellars, Schenk Albrecht von Limpurg-Gaildorf-Schmiedelfeld had the Old Castle built between 1479 and 1482. The completion of the four-winged building in 1482 is documented by a stone tablet above the main entrance. The Lords of Limpurg-Gaildorf resided here for several generations. After the male line died out in 1690 and later in 1713, the castle passed to various families through inheritance. In 1700, the wedding of Juliane Dorothea von Limpurg-Gaildorf to Count Johann Wilhelm von Wurmbrand took place in the great hall, which today bears his name.
