Old Castle Herrenchiemsee
The Old Palace Herrenchiemsee, originally a monastery, is situated on Herrenchiemsee Island in Lake Chiemsee. This building, later transformed into a palace, is a place where important foundations for the Federal Republic of Germany were laid.
History+
The origins of the Old Palace Herrenchiemsee date back: between 620 and 629, the oldest Bavarian monastery was founded here, initially as a Benedictine monastery. From 1130, Augustinian canons took over the abbey. In 1158, a Romanesque basilica was completed, which was later elevated to the cathedral of the Diocese of Chiemsee, founded in 1215. The abbey experienced its heyday in the 15th century, but mismanagement led to a temporary secular administration. Under Provost Arsenius Ulrich, the monastery recovered from 1627. New constructions shaped the complex in the 17th and 18th centuries, including a Baroque cathedral and other monastic buildings. The secularization in 1803 led to the dissolution of the monastery and its sale to private owners.
