Old Castle (Höchst)

The origins of the Old Castle date back to the 14th century, when a Gothic customs castle stood on this site. After the end of the Mainz Diocesan Feud in 1463, the expelled Archbishop Diether von Isenburg took up residence here. The majority of the castle was rebuilt in 1586 in the Renaissance style. During the Thirty Years' War, in January 1635, the palace was burned down by troops of Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar and was not rebuilt thereafter. The remaining stones were used in 1772 for the construction of the Bolongaro Palace. After the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss in 1803, the castle fell to the Duchy of Nassau and later, in 1866, to Prussia. In 1908, the family of Adolf von Brüning acquired the property, renovated it, and opened the park to the public.
