Old Castle Neckarbischofsheim

The origins of the Old Castle can be traced back to 1274, when a castle at this location was first mentioned in documents. This complex was originally an imperial fief, but later a Worms fief of the Lords of Helmstatt. The earliest castle probably consisted of a residential tower surrounded by a ring wall and possibly moats from the Rosenbach stream. In 1378, Weiprecht I von Helmstatt gained sole possession of the castle and the town, after which the complex was expanded. Following an inheritance division in 1543 and further acquisitions by Johann von Helmstatt and his father-in-law Philipp von Helmstatt from 1545, the reconstruction into the current castle residence began in 1546.
