Old Castle Tettnang

Town Hall

The Old Castle in Tettnang, once the residence of the Counts of Montfort, now serves as the town hall. It is characterized by its Renaissance architecture and the stepped gables that define its facade.

History+

Following the devastation of the Thirty Years' War, which also destroyed the original castle, the Counts of Montfort used the Torschloss as their residence from 1629. Count Johann V. von Montfort initiated the construction of the Old Castle on the site of the castle ruins from 1667. The Vorarlberg master builder Michael Kuen realized this construction. Although the castle met the economic capabilities of the counts, it did not satisfy their dynastic aspirations, as they considered themselves descendants of the Palatine Counts of Tübingen, belonging to one of Upper Swabia's most distinguished families. This led to the construction of the New Castle under Count Anton III. von Montfort between 1712 and 1728.
