In Bad König is a multifaceted ensemble, consisting of a medieval fortified churchyard, the Old Castle, and the later added New Castle.

History+

The origins of the complex date back to 820, when a fortified churchyard was first mentioned. From 1348, it was partly owned by the Counts of Erbach. In 1477, the fortified churchyard was granted as a fief to Konrad Schenk von Erbach, with the Archbishop of Mainz reserving the right of access, indicating the defensive capability of the complex at that time. A church tower was built in 1478. Count Georg von Erbach began construction of the Old Castle in 1556, removing existing dwellings.
