Saulheim Manor

The castle-like building on "Neue Pforte" street in the old village center of Nieder-Saulheim was built around 1600 by the noble Haxthausen family and used by them as a manorial seat until the 18th century. The building impresses with its beautiful Renaissance wave gable. The window frames date from the early 19th century. Also noteworthy are the rusticated corners. From the cellar of the house, a stone archway leads to an underground passage that led to the former Reformed Church or its predecessor, the old Boland Castle.

At the entrance to the courtyard, there was a stone arched gate on the "Neue Pforte" street side. It was demolished in 1903. The keystone of the gate was adorned with a double coat of arms. During the French Revolution, this coat of arms was broken out by patriots. In 1901, the stone was reinserted above the entrance door of the newly built laundry room, where it remains today. In front of the building there was once a well, behind the building a park. Today, the Neupforte kindergarten is located on this former park area. In 1898, the house was sold to the Finkenauer family. Since this family remained without heirs, the house fell to the community. In later years, the community used the house as a school. Today, the Saulheim Local History Museum is located in the historic building.
