Schedler Manor

The building at Schedlerstraße 8 does not show its noble past. One would rather describe it as a modern two- or three-family house. Nevertheless, it appears in a land register of Count Hugo III von Montfort from the years between 1379 and 1409 as a Montfort estate. It was already referred to as "Gut zum Schedler" at that time. In 1444, it is mentioned as the "Gesäß" (seat) of the Bregenz citizen Leonhard Metzger. At that time, in addition to the farmstead, a larger orchard belonged to the house. Metzger handed over the manor as a benefice to the Bregenz St. Gallus parish church. In the second half of the 16th century, the estate was owned by the Schmid family, who later bore the predicate "von Wellenstein". They were followed by their relative Adrian Abegg and then from 1571 by Captain Jakob von Altensteig. From 1590 to 1616, the manor belonged to the Benedictine monastery of Weingarten. Thereafter, until the 19th century, there was a rapid change of ownership. Among others, the house belonged to the Gugger von Staudach family. From the second half of the 19th century until the 1920s, the building housed the inn "Zum Walsertal". In 1928, the manor was restored and has since served again as a private residence. It is a three-story rectangular building under a gabled roof. The facades are unadorned. The core of the house dates from the 16th century, with the mountain-side wing being added around 1600. Inside, high-quality stucco ceilings from the 17th and 18th centuries have been preserved.
