The area around Amathus was settled as early as 1100 BC. The city's foundation is attributed to Cinyras, who named it after his mother, Amathous. This established Amathus as one of the island's early royal centers.

The ancient city of Amathus is located in Ayios Tykhonas, in the Limassol district, within the Republic of Cyprus on the island of Cyprus. It lies at an elevation of approximately 13 meters above sea level.
