Ancient Town Amrit (عمریت)-Stadium

The origins of the settlement of Amrit date back to the late 3rd millennium BC. Around 1600 BC, the city was founded by Amurrites from Arwad. Under the name Marathos, Amrit gained prominence from the time of Alexander the Great. During Alexander's campaign against the Achaemenid Empire in 333/332 BC, he rejected an alliance offer from the Persian Great King Darius III in Marathos. Later, from 301 BC, the city belonged to the Seleucid Empire. The stadium itself is dated to the early Hellenistic period, approximately the 4th century BC, making it an impressive example of Phoenician architecture.

The stadium of the ancient city of Amrit is located in Syria, in the Tartus Governorate, near the city of Tartus and the Talkalakh district. It stands at an elevation of approximately 10 meters above sea level.

The ancient city of Amrit, including its stadium, is accessible to visitors today. The stadium, carved into the rock, is approximately 225 to 230 meters long and 30 to 40 meters wide. Parts of seven seating rows are still preserved. It was open to the west and had two entrances between the seating rows on the east side, as well as a tunnel to the interior. It is believed that sacred competitions took place here.
