The ancient city of Antigoneia, a significant archaeological site, rises on a mountainside in southern Albania. Once founded by King Pyrrhus and named after his beloved, its ruins today bear witness to a rich history dating back to Illyrian times.

History+

The origins of Antigoneia stretch back to the period of Illyrian settlement. Its refoundation was carried out by the Epirote King Pyrrhus (319–272 BC), who named the city after his beloved Antigone. A decisive event in its history was the conquest by the Romans in 167 BC, which led to the city's destruction. Following this event, Antigoneia was never rebuilt and fell into ruin.

The ruins of the ancient city of Antigoneia are located near the village of Saraqinishta in the Gjirokastra district, Gjirokastra region, Albania. The site is situated at an elevation of approximately 599 m above sea level.

Visitors today can explore the extensive ruins of the ancient city of Antigoneia. Remains of the acropolis, sections of the four-kilometer-long city wall, buildings of the agora, basilicas, and some residential houses have been unearthed and testify to the settlement's former grandeur. The site is protected as an archaeological park.
