The ancient city of Apollonia Pontica, located in modern-day Sozopol, Bulgaria, was once a Greek colony on the Black Sea. Its strategically favorable position with two sheltered harbors made it a center for maritime trade and shaped its economic prosperity.

Apollonia Pontica was founded around 610 BC by Greek settlers from Miletus and developed into one of the earliest Greek colonies in the Black Sea region. It was named in honor of the god Apollo, who was revered here as a healer. To distinguish it from other cities of the same name, the epithet
