History+
In 181 BC, 3,000 veterans founded a military colony of Latin law by senatorial decree, after a Celtic settlement advance had been repelled. Aquileia quickly developed into a commercial center, as it was located at the end of the Amber Road and provided access to the province of Noricum, which was of importance to Rome due to its mining. The city was known for its glass industry, iron smelting, and the production of amphorae, as well as its shipyards. Figures such as Julius Caesar and Marcus Aurelius visited the city. Aquileia long served as a bulwark against invading peoples and was Marcus Aurelius's headquarters in 168 AD during the Marcomannic Wars.
