The ancient city of Aquileia, in what is now Friuli-Venezia Giulia in Italy, was once a metropolis of the Roman Empire. Its remains offer insights into Roman civilization.
History+
Aquileia was founded in 181 BC as a military colony of Latin right by 3,000 veterans, after a Celtic advance in the region had been repelled. The city quickly developed into a transshipment point, especially as the terminus of the Amber Road, which brought the raw material from the Baltic Sea to Italy. Its proximity to the province of Noricum, known for its mining, also contributed to its economic prosperity. In addition to trade, Aquileia was known for its glass industry, iron smelting, and amphora production. Its strategic location made it a bulwark against invasions, and figures such as Julius Caesar and Augustus visited the city.
