The ancient city of Aquileia, located in today's Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy, was once a metropolis of the Roman Empire. Its remains show its central role as a transportation hub and trade center.
History+
Aquileia was founded in 181 BC as a military colony by 3,000 veterans after a Celtic advance in the region had been repelled. The city quickly developed into an important trading post, especially as the terminus of the Amber Road, which brought the raw material from the Baltic Sea region to Italy. Its proximity to the province of Noricum, important for its mining, also contributed to its economic boom. Aquileia was known for its glass industry, iron smelting, and amphora production. Figures such as Julius Caesar and Marcus Aurelius visited the city, which also served as a bulwark against “barbarians.” In 170, Aquileia was besieged during the Marcomannic Wars.
