The remains of the ancient town can be visited

In Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy, the ancient city of Aquileia was once a center of the Roman Empire. The remains of the Domus e Oratori offer a glimpse into the Roman past.

History+

Aquileia was founded in 181 BC as a military colony by 3,000 veterans after a Celtic advance was repelled. Its location on the Natissa River made it a transport hub and the terminus of the Amber Road, which brought amber from the Baltic Sea to Italy. Aquileia developed into a trading metropolis, known for its glass industry, iron smelting, and amphora production.
