History+
Aquileia was founded in 181 BC as a military colony after a Celtic advance was repelled. The city quickly developed into a central hub for trade, as it lay at the end of the Amber Road and provided access to the province of Noricum. Aquileia was known for its glass industry, iron smelting, and amphora production. Shipyards and the manufacture of transport accessories also thrived.
