The remains of the ancient town can be visited

Near modern-day Boğaziçi in Turkey, the ancient city of Bargylia, once a coastal city in Caria, is located. Although only a few remains are visible today, they had strategic importance in antiquity.

History+

Originally, the city is said to have been named Andanos. In the 5th century BC, Bargylia was part of the Delian League. In the 3rd century BC, Bargylia developed into a center, surpassing the neighboring city of Kindya. After a period under Seleucid rule, Bargylia was declared free in 196 BC and later, after the Aristonikos uprising, became part of the Roman province of Asia. Between the 1st century BC and the end of the 2nd century AD, the city minted its own coins.
